Website Usability
The concept of usability vs. "eye-candy" and graphics is coming to
the forefront in the WWW community. While the terms "user-friendly"
and "intuitive" tend to be over-used, you must always strike a balance
among various factors, including:
- Industry standards (even if these standards are not formal).
- Initial setup and creation of the documentation (you can do some really
complex things).
- Ease of maintenance (you need to train the user's company to maintain this
documentation. If you make it too complex to start with, the documentation
custodian won't have a chance. After all, it took us years to get this
good!).
- Jakob Nielsen's Website
- Mr. Nielsen is an acknowledged industry expert on WWW usability. His book,
Designing
Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity is one of the treasures of usability
design.
- The
80/20 Principle
- Richard Koch.
The secret to success by achieving more with less.
